Hiawatha
2nd October - 5th October 2008
Lydian Singers
From 2nd to 4th October 2008, the stage of Queen’s Hall will be transformed into a Native American Village as the Lydians, with Steel, present “Scenes from the Song of Hiawatha” a trilogy composed by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor.
Directed by Pat Bishop, the Lydians will joyously tell the story of Hiawatha’s wedding to Minnehaha, who left her tribe, the Dakotas, to marry Hiawatha, an Iroquois. Then will follow the heartbreaking tale of Minnehaha’s death, as famine and disease ravage the tribe; and finally Hiawatha’s prophecy of the future devastation of his people, and his departure “to the Land of the Hereafter”.
There are few, if any, operas set in the New World that speak of the people of the First Nations and this is really the story of a great leader.
The music is colorful and conjures up great imagery associated with feasting, landscape, and climate. It features strong rhythms throughout the saga and will recall to audiences their childhood images of North American Indians. It is a demanding work for the Choir, as it features mainly choral performance and provides a great setting to display a range of wonderful solo performances. Audiences can look forward to hearing both the better-known and the newer Lydian voices.
The complete trilogy “The Wedding Feast of Hiawatha”, “The Death of Minnehaha”, and “Hiawatha’s Departure” was first conducted in 1900, and comes from the epic twenty-two canto poem of the famous American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, based on the legends of the Ojibway Indians. It was published in 1855.
Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was the first major black English musical composer and conductor. He was celebrated in Victorian England for Hiawatha, and also received rave reviews for Hiawatha in the US, where he was a guest at the White House during the administration of President Theodore Roosevelt.
He died at the age of 37.
Hiawatha is the Lydians’ latest opera and follows the group’s previous works: Orpheus and Eurydice (2005), Turandot (1999), L’Elisir D’Amore (1996), and Koanga (1995).

Blanchissuse
18th & 19th October 2008
Trinidad and Tobago’s audiences will be treated to two evenings of art, dance, music and song as Queen’s Hall opens its curtains to the Noble Douglas Dance Company Inc.’s (NDDCI’s) 23rd dance season, Blanchisseuse – “Dance…for the B.Holder”. The contemporary modern dance company will honour the legacy of creativity and art of one of the Caribbean’s arts icons, the late Boscoe Holder, with a gala opening on Saturday October 18, 2008 under the auspices of Holder’s wife and muse, Sheila.
NDDCI’s founder and artistic director, Noble Douglas, has brought some of Trinidad and Tobago’s foremost choreographers, dancers and musicians together for this tribute. The cabaret style show will run without intermission with a diverse offering of dance genres including contemporary modern, jazz and Holder’s signature French Creole folk style. Heather Henderson-Gordon, who contributed hugely to Blanchisseuse’s choreography, saw this as her opportunity to capture the essence of Holder’s period of dance and music. “I wanted to depict the style, music and most of all the attitude of Boscoe’s era. I searched for music of that time and brought the grandeur and flamboyancy that was truly Boscoe to the stage,” she said. Also showcased is the choreographic work of Adéle Bynoe as she recreates the attitude and flair of Bele’s forerunner, Beguine, which Holder was known for.

Round the City is a collection of four short stories set in and around a city in Trinidad. Woven together by a taxi driving narrator played by Cacique Award winning actor Glenn Davis, the stories explore themes of love, obsession, relationships and crime. The four stories are: “Yesterday is Gone” which deals with euthanasia; “Man and ‘Oman” which takes a look at infidelity from a different perspective; “Don’t Tell. Don’t Ask.” which tells a tale of a homosexual affair in high office, and “Educating Peter” which explores the mindset of the criminal.
The show uses multi-media as well as live action to tell the stories.

Theatre Camp 2010
5th July - 25th July 2010
Queen’s Hall’s Theatre Camp 2010 Puts on “Tay Lay Lay With Kitch”
The Grand Master will be remembered and reinterpreted by participants of Queen’s Hall’s Theatre Camp 2010 at “Tay Lay Lay with Kitch”, a full-fledged production on Friday 23rd July from 5:00 PM at Queen’s Hall. For three weeks since Monday 5th July, 80 children between the ages of seven and 13 have been tutored in the disciplines of steelpan, drama, design, dance, voice and, for the first time, yoga—all while being exposed to the works, life and genius of Aldwyn Roberts, The Lord Kitchener.
The theatre camp has been staged without interruption since its inception in 1986 and continues to be the flag-bearer of the Hall’s community outreach program. Conceived 24 years ago by the Patrons of Queen’s Hall as a tool to develop greater cultural awareness and skill among young people, the camp has evolved into an in-demand, solid arts program. Its culminating concert has traditionally offered students an opportunity to showcase their artistic discovery.
“We saw it as a way to foster love and respect for the performing arts and to groom an audience,” explained Margaret Walcott, the camp’s coordinator. Throughout its existence dance educator Noble Douglas has been artistic director. One of the annual event’s main features is its focus on the accomplishments of specific cultural icons. Andre Tanker, Bob Marley, Boogsie Sharpe and Peter Minshall are among focal artists in previous years. This time around the prolific output of 11 time road march winner, Lord Kitchener, was brought into focus for participants a decade after his death.
Walcott emphasised that in a context in which children are bombarded by foreign culture forms and celebrities, the camp is an important opportunity to foster awareness about our regional and local art forms and heroes. She describes as “amazing” children’s response to learning about their own. Yvonne Roberts-White, General Manager of Queen’s Hall, added that Queen’s Hall is proud to partner in the effort because it supports the institution’s goal of nurturing the country’s artistic and cultural life.
In its 2010 edition the camp features tuition in steelpan by Dougie Reddon, drama by Samantha Pierre, design by Lari Richardson, dance by Kwasi Romero, voice by Janine Romano and yoga by Lorraine O’Connor. The Theatre Camp employs an informal workshop approach to learning that couples small groups with hands-on training from leading professionals in the performing arts.
“They learn on the ground, not from books,” Walcott noted of the training process. “This is such a simple way to address both arts education and cultural memory.”
Tickets are available at the door on Friday 23 July, 2010 and cost $50 for adults and $25 for youngsters.
